The role of magnon-phonon coupling in the low-temperature behavior of the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) in YIG/Pt has been puzzling for more than a decade. To elucidate the origin of the anomalous peak around 80 K, we investigate the temperature evolution of SSE, spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR), and magnetic anisotropy in the same YIG/Pt heterostructure. We find that these effects, along with magnetic damping, show the peaks at the same temperature (∼80 K). This simultaneous occurrence, where no heat is applied in the case of SMR, rules out the phonon-magnon drag related origin of SSE in the YIG/Pt system. We further show that the intrinsic surface anisotropy behavior in YIG is responsible for controlling the SSE, SMR, and magnetic damping in the YIG/Pt structure. Our findings not onl...

This paper concerns the staffing optimization problem in multi-skill call centers. The objective is to find a minimal cost staffing solution while meeting a target level for the quality of service (QoS) to customers. We consider a staffing problem in which joint chance constraints are imposed on the QoS of the day. Our joint chance-constrained formulation is more rational capturing the correlation between different call types, as compared to separate chance-constrained versions considered in previous studies. We show that, in general, the probability functions in the joint-chance constraints display S-shaped curves, and the optimal solutions should belong to the concave regions of the curves. Thus, we propose an approach combining a heuristic phase to identify solutions lying in the...

In this letter, three ternary lead-free Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-SrTiO3-ABO3 piezoceramics (ABO3 = LiNbO3, BaZrO3, and LaFeO3) were studied. The addition of ABO3 into Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-SrTiO3 ceramic induces a ferroelectric tetragonal-to-ergodic relaxor pseudocubic phase transition, resulting in the significant disruption of ferroelectric order with the shift of the ferroelectric-relaxor transition temperature down to below room temperature. The conventional furnace sintering and microwave sintering methods are conducted in this study to improve the electric field-induced strain properties of BNST-LN piezoceramic. Interestingly, the Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-SrTiO3-LiNbO3 sample sintered via microwave sintering method shows an ultrahigh normalized strain of 995 pm/V at an ultralow driving field of 2 kV/mm,...

We here invent an implicitly new optical device - cylindrical Fresnel lenses historically used in the decades-old lighthouse concentrator to find application in the field of concentrator photovoltaic, with numerous demonstrations of exotic features in optics. The precious attribute of such a solar concentrator is its ability to grant a focal point sequence, essentially distributed over an arc at any light incidence. The other striking merit of this design is its high acceptance angle, about 60°, at hand and even up to 90°, ideally. We have applied this approach to a simplified principle-of-concept model that closely depicts the octagonal cylindrical Fresnel lens in essence. This convergence feature was evidenced in a mock-up model through optical simulation and further consolidated ...

A forward error correction (FEC) and unity-rate coded (URC) autoencoder (AE)-assisted communication system is proposed for the first time, which relies on soft iterative decoding for attaining a vanishingly low error probability. The AE-demapper is specifically designed for directly calculating the extrinsic logarithmic likelihood ratios (LLRs), which can be directly entered into the URC decoder for soft iterative decoding. This avoids the potential degradation due to the conversion of symbol probabilities to bit LLRs. A comprehensive capacity analysis of the AE is performed, which demonstrates the capacity advantage of the AE-aided constellation design over its conventional quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)/ phase shift keying (PSK) counterpart. Furthermore, we carry out its EX...

Fingerprint-inspired elastomeric grating meta-skin (EGMS) is herein fabricated to investigate the chirality of fingerprints. The EGMS is made by a facile nanoimprinting method with a diffraction grating as a template using polydimethylsiloxane, followed by gold deposition. The chirality of the surface is caused by symmetry breaking, induced by the pattern (P) and curvature (T). Furthermore, the chiroptical properties of EGMS are reconfigurable through the control of the skew angle (θ), which is the angle between P and T. The chiroptical properties of a fingerprint are also shown and interpreted in this perspective. On the basis of the results, we suggest the strategy to impart chirality on the surface, which is reconfigurable by controlling P and T. It will be a useful method to pro...

Understanding the effects of phase transition, phase coexistence, and surface magnetism on the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) in a magnetic system is essential to manipulate the spin to charge current conversion efficiency for spincaloritronic applications. We aim to elucidate these effects by performing a comprehensive study of the temperature dependence of the LSSE in biphase iron oxide (BPIO = α-Fe2O3 + Fe3O4) thin films grown on Si (100) and Al2O3 (111) substrates. A combination of a temperature-dependent anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) and electrical resistivity measurements show that the contribution of the ANE from the BPIO layer is negligible in comparison to the intrinsic LSSE in the Si/BPIO/Pt heterostructure, even at room temperature
