Transparent electrodes (TEs) are pivotal components in many modern devices such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, touch screens, wearable electronic devices, smart windows, and transparent heaters. Recently, the high demand for flexibility and low cost in TEs requires a new class of transparent conductive materials (TCMs), serving as substitutes for the conventional indium tin oxide (ITO). So far, ITO has been the most used TCM despite its brittleness and high cost. Among the different emerging alternative materials to ITO, metallic nanomaterials have received much interest due to their remarkable optical-electrical properties, low cost, ease of manufacturing, flexibility, and widespread applicability. These involve metal grids, thin oxide/metal/oxide multilayers, metal nanowir...

A theoretical approach to quantitatively determine the photothermally driven enhancement of molecular mobility of graphene-indomethacin mixtures under infrared laser irradiation is proposed. Graphene plasmons absorb incident electromagnetic energy and dissipate them into heat. The absorbed energy depends on optical properties of graphene plasmons, which are sensitive to structural parameters, and concentration of plasmonic nanostructures. By using theoretical modelling, temperature gradients of the bulk drug with different concentrations of graphene plasmons are calculated. From these, the temperature dependence of structural molecular relaxation and diffusion of indomethacin are determined and how the heating process significantly enhances the drug mobility is found out.

Different countries have responded to the pandemic with distinct domestic and international travel restrictions. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stringency of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) countermeasures in Japan against their G20 cohorts. Primary data were monitored at a ski resort in Kyushu regarding the social acceptance of initial COVID-19 countermeasures, ranging from hygiene and local “lockdowns” to border control measures.

Satirical cartooning in Vietnam is subject to a complex dynamic: an increasingly liberalised and internationalised economy, and the rise of social media in a one-party state. This article examines what state-sanctioned satirical cartoons can reveal about the representation and management of political criticism in such a context. We find a growing trend of depicting corruption as a systemic problem, which is present in 45 per cent of the sample and in 70 per cent of the 20 most-viral cartoons in one of Vietnam’s most popular magazines, Tuoi Tre Cuoi (Youth Humour). This trend can be interpreted as a change in the sensibility of audiences and a shift toward a more tolerant media landscape. The trend, however, may also be a worrying sign of the dual dangers of cynicism in Vietnamese po...

In our search for novel small molecules activating procaspase-3, we have designed and synthesized two series of novel (E)-N'-arylidene-2-(2-oxoindolin-1-yl)acetohydrazides (4) and (Z)-2-(5-substituted-2-oxoindolin-1-yl)-N'-(2-oxoindolin-3-ylidene)acetohydrazides (5). Cytotoxic evaluation revealed that the compounds showed notable cytotoxicity toward three human cancer cell lines: colon cancer SW620, prostate cancer PC-3, and lung cancer NCI-H23. Especially, six compounds, including 4f–h and 4n–p, exhibited cytotoxicity equal or superior to positive control PAC-1, the first procaspase-3 activating compound. The most potent compound 4o was three- to five-fold more cytotoxic than PAC-1 in three cancer cell lines tested. Analysis of compounds effects on cell cycle and apoptosis demonstr...

In this paper, we report a simple method for enhancing the electrical property of silver nanowire transparent conductive electrodes (AgNW-TCE). When scotch tape was attached to the surface of AgNW-TCE and then removed, the sheet resistance of the AgNW-TCE was drastically decreased, while the transmittance was insignificantly lost; namely, the sheet resistance was reduced from 98.5 Ω/□ to 27.3 Ω/□ and the transmittance was decreased from 92% to 89%. The improved sheet resistance could be due to the transfer of the glue on the tape onto the AgNW-TCE, resulting in better contact at the junction between AgNWs.

Vaccine hesitancy is a major threat to COVID-19 vaccination programs. This study aimed to examine the public attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccines, the variance of these attitudes, and associated determinants within a large COVID-19 outbreak in Vietnam

One-dimensional hybrid nanostructures composed of a plasmonic gold nanowire core covered by a shell of magnetic oxide nanoparticles (Au@FexOy NWs) were synthesized by a one-pot solvothermal synthesis process. The effects of reaction temperature, time, reducing agent, and precursor as well as postsynthesis treatment were optimized to produce highly uniform NWs with a diameter of 226 ± 25 nm and a plasmonic core aspect ratio of 25 to 82. By exploiting the interaction of NWs with an external magnetic field, precise arrangements into highly periodic photonic structures were achieved, which can generate distinctive structural colors that are vividly iridescent and polarization-sensitive. Furthermore, a Bouligand-type chiral nematic film consisting of multistacked unidirectional layers of...

It is well-known that the amount of glucose in the blood that exceeds the normal sugar blood range can cause diabetes, which is one of the most dangerous diseases that thread human health. Amongst a lot of methods that have been developed to measure glucose levels, electrochemical glucose sensors have attracted more attention due to their accuracy and efficiency. In our work, a simple, instant, and economical chemical process was conducted to deposit NiO nanostructures on the surface of a nickel foam electrode for non-enzymatic glucose electrochemical sensor. The morphologies and components of synthesised materials were characterised by field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were used to measure ...

In this paper, a new design of the state observer is proposed to reduce the unstable low-speed region of the adaptive full-order observer (AFO) based speed sensorless speed control of induction motors (IM). The proposed state observer is designed in z-domain rather than in s-domain following the pole-placement approach. The convergence rate of the proposed observer can be made faster than that of the IM poles without extra oscillation effects and the unstable low-speed region of AFO can be reduced to the zero-synchronous-frequency (ZSF) line. Also, a modified adaptation law of the AFO is derived to estimate the rotor speed. Based on the modified AFO, a continuous control set model predictive control (CCS-MPC) is designed for the inner-loop torque control. The cost function of the CC...
