End-to-end learning systems are conceived for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM)-aided optical Intensity Modulation paired with Direct Detection (IM/DD) communications relying on the Autoencoder (AE) architecture in deep learning. We first propose an AE-aided Layered ACO-OFDM (LACO-OFDM) scheme, termed as LACONet, for exploiting the increased bandwidth efficiency of LACO-OFDM. LACONet employs a Neural Network (NN) at the transmitter for bit-to-symbol mapping, and another NN at the receiver for recovering the data bits, which together form an AE and can be trained in an end-to-end manner for simultaneously minimizing both the BER and PAPR. Moreover, the detection architecture of LACONet is drastically simplified compared to classical LACO-OFDM, since the Fast Fourier T...

We study the impact of economic policy uncertainty on the probability and duration of economic recessions in 10 major European Union countries over the period 1987Q2–2021Q1. We find that economic policy uncertainty results in not only a higher probability of economic recessions but also longer recessions. Specifically, with a one-standard-deviation increase in the economic policy uncertainty index, on average the probability of an economic recession goes up by 14%, and the probability of an economic recession ending reduces by 27%, controlling for general economic uncertainty and economic and political factors. Moreover, we find that fiscal expansion, adequate political support, and left-wing governments’ policies are important to alleviate the effects of policy uncertainty on the l...

In this work, we investigated the effect of morphology on the analytical performance of α-Fe2O3 nanostructures-based electrochemical sensors toward chloramphenicol (CAP) antibiotic using three designed morphologies including α-Fe2O3 nano-tube (α-Fe2O3-T), α-Fe2O3 nano-rice (α-Fe2O3-R), and α-Fe2O3 nano-plate (α-Fe2O3-P). Among these morphologies, α-Fe2O3-T displayed an outstanding electrochemical activity owing to the unique hollow structure and large specific surface area. However, due to the small pores size, α-Fe2O3-T showed the high steric hindrance (SD) effect towards an antibiotic with complex molecular structure, as CAP, leading to a significant decrease of their CAP electrochemical sensing performance. The CAP analytical performance of α-Fe2O3-R was highest in investigated m...

We report a five-fold luminance increase of green-light-emitting CdSe@ZnS quantum-dot LEDs (QLEDs) in response to treatment with a 2-ethoxyethanol solution of cesium carbonate (Cs2CO3). The maximum luminous yield of Cs2CO3-treated QLED is as high as 3.41 cd A−1 at 6.4 V. To elucidate device-performance improvement, we model measured currents as the sum of radiative and non-radiative recombination components, which are respectively represented by modified Shockley equations. Variations in model parameters show that a shift in Fermi level, reduction of barrier heights, and passivation of mid-gap defect states are the main results of Cs2CO3 treatment. In spite of a large luminance difference, light-extraction efficiency remains the same at 9% regardless of Cs2CO3 treatment because of t...

Iron represents the principal constituent of the Earth's core, but its high-pressure melting diagram remains ambiguous. Here we present a simple analytical approach to predict the melting properties of iron under deep-Earth conditions. In our model, anharmonic free energies of the solid phase are directly determined by the moment expansion technique in quantum statistical mechanics. This basis associated with the Lindemann criterion for a vibrational instability can deduce the melting temperature. Moreover, we correlate the thermal expansion process with the shear response to explain a discontinuity of atomic volume, enthalpy, and entropy upon melting. Our numerical calculations are quantitatively consistent with recent experiments and simulations. The obtained results would improve...

This paper introduces a new database of financial crises, providing an important insight into the causes, duration, and consequences of different types of financial crises. Besides extending the systemic banking crises database by Laeven and Valencia (2020) to the period 1970–2019, we develop new approaches for the identification of currency and sovereign debt crises, which we regard as preferable in some respects to those in the literature. Covering 206 countries, our crises database draws on 151 systemic banking crises (1970–2019), 414 currency crises (1950–2019), 200 sovereign debt crises (1960–2019), 75 twin crises (1970–2019), and 21 triple crises (1970–2019). We provide evidence that banking and debt crises tend to coincide or precede currency crises, while debt crises and ban...

Cow behavior recognition systems support the assessment of cows’ condition by providing their behavior information. Accelerometers are particularly suited for a non-invasive solution for the development of these monitoring systems. They are cheap and simple in setting up and providing high-performance recognition when using machine learning algorithms. The activity complexity of animals brings challenges in real context applications because different behaviors may have similar acceleration data. The reason is that they contain similar gestures, for example, feeding and standing. In our previous work, we proposed a cows’ behavior classifier based on leg-mounted acceleration data. The distinguishing of similar behaviors, such as feeding and standing, is limited by the data. This study...

Magnoliae Flos is a traditional herbal medicine used to treat nasal congestion associated with headache, empyema, and allergic rhinitis. In our preliminary screening of crude drugs used in Japanese Kampo formulas for melanin synthesis, the methanol extract of Magnoliae Flos was found to exhibit strong melanin synthesis activity. However, there have been no studies evaluating the effects of Magnoliae Flos or its constituents on melanogenesis. The present study aimed to isolate the active compounds from Magnoliae Flos that activate melanin synthesis in melanoma cells and three-dimensional human skin equivalent, and to investigate the molecular mechanism underlying melanin induction. The methanol extract of Magnoliae Flos induced an increase of melanin content in both B16-F1 and HMV-II...

To enhance the performance of lithium-ion batteries, zinc oxide (ZnO) has generated interest as an anode candidate owing to its high theoretical capacity. However, because of its limitations such as its slow chemical reaction kinetics, intense capacity fading on potential cycling, and low rate capability, composite anodes of ZnO and other materials are manufactured. In this study, we introduce binary and ternary composites of ZnO with other metal oxides (MOs) and carbon-based materials. Most ZnO-based composite anodes exhibit a higher specific capacity, rate performance, and cycling stability than a single ZnO anode. The synergistic effects between ZnO and the other MOs or carbon-based materials can explain the superior electrochemical characteristics of these ZnO-based composites. ...
