This paper is primarily concerned with the following random coverage problem. Given a specified compact region A in a d-dimensional Euclidean space, what is the probability that A is fully covered by a union of Euclidean balls of radius r centred on n points placed independently uniformly at random in A, in the large-n limit with r=r(n) becoming small in an appropriate manner?

The function a is assumed to be critical in the sense of Hebey and Vaugon. For low dimensions N∈(2s,4s) , we prove that the Robin function ϕa satisfies infx∈Ωϕa(x)=0, which extends a result obtained by Druet for s=1 . In dimensions N∈(8s/3,4s), we then study the asymptotics of the fractional Brezis–Nirenberg energy S(a+εV) for some V∈L∞(Ω) as ε→0+. We give a precise description of the blow-up profile of (almost) minimizing sequences and characterize the concentration speed and the location of concentration points.

Evidence exploring the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure and corporate financial performance (CFP) is consistently inconsistent, if not outright contradictory. We assert that much of this confusion is due to a failure to integrate both firm internal performance and the external environment into theoretical and empirical analyses of the effect of CSR disclosure on firm efficiency. This paper attempts to bring these two facets together in an examination of banking sector efficiency in a situation where the entire external environment is in flux, namely transition.

Competing effectively in the contemporary marketing landscape is becoming increasing challenging. Equally increasing therefore is the pertinence for organisations to be customer oriented. Academic discourse emphasises the need for more customer-oriented approach. Inspired by gaps in the literature, this study explores the contingency factors and performance implications of customer accounting in the Kuwaiti financial services industry.

Cone-nets are conjugate nets on a surface such that along each individual curve of one family of parameter curves there is a cone in tangential contact with the surface. The corresponding conjugate curve network is projectively invariant and is characterized by the existence of particular transformations. We study properties of that transformation theory and illustrate how several known surface classes appear within our framework. We present cone-nets in the classical smooth setting of differential geometry as well as in the context of a consistent discretization with counterparts to all relevant statements and notions of the smooth setting.

Respiratory infections are the most common reason for admission to paediatric intensive care units (PICU). Most patients with lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) receive broad-spectrum antimicrobials, despite low rates of bacterial culture confirmation. Here, we evaluated a molecular diagnostic test for LRTI to inform the better use of antimicrobials.

This article provides empirical results for internal migration and commuting flows using panel data for 89 economic regions in Norway for the years 2001–2014. The emphasis is on the potential effects of different incentive variables. We consider both in- and out-migration as well as in- and out-commuting with a common set of explanatory variables. We perform panel data analysis for four educational groups using seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) models, acknowledging that the effects of the incentive variables may vary across educational groups. Generally, we find weak responses to the incentive variables for the eight response variables, but they differ somewhat across the educational groups.

Understanding how and the extent to which contract farming arrangements impact agricultural productivity is important to ensuring that policies are designed to maximize the likelihood of success. Using cross-sectional data from 516 soybean farmers in Northern Ghana, we provide empirical evidence that contract farming increases soybean productivity and technical efficiency in Northern Ghana. We use propensity score matching to reduce bias from observables, and then estimate a stochastic production frontier model that addresses selection bias arising from unobservable variables. We find that the technical efficiency levels of contract farmers are 77 percent compared with 69 percent for non-contract farmers. We also find that access to credit, extension contact, and farmer group member...

Regional facial image synthesis conditioned on a semantic mask has achieved great attention in the field of computational visual media. However, the appearances of different regions may be inconsistent with each other after performing regional editing. In this paper, we focus on harmonized regional style transfer for facial images. A multi-scale encoder is proposed for accurate style code extraction. The key part of our work is a multi-region style attention module. It adapts multiple regional style embeddings from a reference image to a target image, to generate a harmonious result.
