Previous studies have reported high prognostic accuracy of circulating neurofilament light (NfL) at 24–72 h after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), but performance at earlier time points and after in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) is less investigated. We aimed to assess plasma NfL during the first 48 h after OHCA and IHCA to predict long-term outcomes.

We appreciate the insightful comments by Prof. Honoré and colleagues regarding our target trial emulation on the effect of erythromycin in critically ill patients with sepsis [1, 2]. Prof. Honoré and colleagues suggest that, in theory, removal of erythromycin from the circulation by renal replacement therapy (RRT) could dilute the potential effect of erythromycin, and that it may therefore be necessary to exclude patients undergoing RRT.

Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary branch of engineering combining mechanical, electrical and electronics, control and automation, and computer engineering fields. The main research task of mechatronics is design, control, and optimization of advanced devices, products, and hybrid systems utilizing the concepts found in all these fields. The purpose of this special issue is to help better understand how mechatronics will impact on the practice and research of developing advanced techniques to model, control, and optimize complex systems. The special issue presents recent advances in mechatronics and related technologies. The selected topics give an overview of the state of the art and present new research results and prospects for the future development of the interdisciplinary fie...

The role of upper airways microbiota and its association with ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) development in mechanically ventilated (MV) patients is unclear. Taking advantage of data collected in a prospective study aimed to assess the composition and over-time variation of upper airway microbiota in patients MV for non-pulmonary reasons, we describe upper airway microbiota characteristics among VAP and NO-VAP patients.

Dexmedetomidine has analgesic properties, but the intraoperative analgesic effect of dexmedetomidine is often masked by the effects of other general anaesthetics. Therefore, the degree to which it reduces intraoperative pain intensity remains unclear. The objective of this double-blind, randomised controlled trial was to evaluate the independent intraoperative analgesic efficacy of dexmedetomidine in real-time.
