Satisfaction with life is a self-reported measure of the quality of life that has become a critical societal indicator extensively used for the evaluation and comparison of a wide range of trends and policies. This study fuses five cross-sectional travel surveys conducted from 1992 to 2018 across various geographical locations in California. Using the fused sample, we develop generalized ordered logit models to examine the effects of demographic characteristics, travel-related attributes, general and transport-related attitudinal variables, and context-control variables on individuals’ self-reported measures of life satisfaction. We find that longer commute times, mobility limitations, and a tendency to see travel as a waste of time are negatively associated with life satisfaction.<...

We provide micro foundations for the global production function (GPF) based on the standard microeconomic model, and we develop a parallel probabilistic model with similar properties. The theoretical and probabilistic models of the GPF are integrated in the context of a technology choice problem. We construct a primitive, named the augmented transformation function, to obtain a GPF and its associated joint distribution that includes the output and labor-saving and capital-saving technological innovations. This type of primitive allows us not only to derive the theoretical GPF but also to consistently build a link between the substitutability microparameters (elasticities) and the probabilistic parameters (correlations).

To minimize the average of a set of log-convex functions, the stochastic Newton method iteratively updates its estimate using subsampled versions of the full objective’s gradient and Hessian. We contextualize this optimization problem as sequential Bayesian inference on a latent state-space model with a discriminatively-specified observation process. Applying Bayesian filtering then yields a novel optimization algorithm that considers the entire history of gradients and Hessians when forming an update.

Micro RNA (miRNA) plays important roles in macrophage polarization. However, the manner in which miRNA regulate macrophage polarization in response to dermatophagoides farinae protein 1(Der f1)-induced asthma has not been defined. This study aims to explore the role of miRNAs in regulating macrophages in asthma.

We study the problem of multimodal embedding-based entity alignment (EA) between different knowledge graphs. Recent works have attempted to incorporate images (visual context) to address EA in a multimodal view. While the benefits of multimodal information have been observed, its negative impacts are non-negligible as injecting images without constraints brings much noise. It also remains unknown under what circumstances or to what extent visual context is truly helpful to the task.

The core capabilities of soft grippers/soft robotic hands are grasping and manipulation. At present, most related research often improves the grasping and manipulation performance by structural design. When soft grippers rely on compressive force and friction to achieve grasping, the influence of the surface microstructure is also significant. Three types of fingerprint-inspired textures with relatively regular patterns were prepared on a silicone rubber surface via mold casting by imitating the three basic shapes of fingerprint patterns (i.e., whorls, loops, and arches). Tribological experiments and tip pinch tests were performed using fingerprint-like silicone rubber films rubbing against glass in dry and lubricated conditions to examine their performance.

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangement, which is mostly showed as fused with echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 4 gene (EML4), accounts 3–7% of all common mutations in non-small lung cancer (NSCLC). An intergenic region (chr2: 30,193,816), which located on upstream of the adjacent ALK gene, was never been reported as a ALK patterner before.

This open access book includes contributions by leading researchers and industry thought leaders on various topics related to the essence of software engineering and their application in industrial projects. It offers a broad overview of research findings dealing with current practical software engineering issues and also pointers to potential future developments. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of adesso AG, adesso gathered some of the pioneers of software engineering including Manfred Broy, Ivar Jacobson and Carlo Ghezzi at a special symposium, where they presented their thoughts about latest software engineering research and which are part of this book. This way it offers readers a concise overview of the essence of software engineering, providing valuable insights into the ...
