"We have designed this third edition of Java, Java, Java to be suitable for a typical Introduction to Computer Science (CS1) course or for a slightly more advanced Java as a Second Language course. This edition retains the “objects first” approach to programming and problem solving that was characteristic of the first two editions. Throughout the text we emphasize careful coverage of Java language features, introductory programming concepts, and object-oriented design principles.
The third edition retains many of the features of the first two editions, including:
Early Introduction of Objects
Emphasis on Object Oriented Design (OOD)
Unified Modeling Language (UML) Diagrams
Self-study Exercises with Answers
Programming, Debugging, and Design Tips.

This volume deals with land degradation, which is occurring in almost all terrestrial biomes and agro-ecologies, in both low and high income countries and is stretching to about 30% of the total global land area. About three billion people reside in these degraded lands. However, the impact of land degradation is especially severe on livelihoods of the poor who heavily depend on natural resources. The annual global cost of land degradation due to land use and cover change (LUCC) and lower cropland and rangeland productivity is estimated to be about 300 billion USD. Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) accounts for the largest share (22%) of the total global cost of land degradation. Only about 38% of the cost of land degradation due to LUCC - which accounts for 78% of the US$300 billion loss - ... |
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) are under increasing pressure to implement sustainability practices and collaborate in sustainable development. To do so, they can choose to collaborate with other organisations in order to overcome the challenges and barriers found in moving towards sustainability. Sustainability issues in SMEs have been discussed in the last two decades, but the knowledge on the inter-organisational collaboration towards sustainability remains dispersed. In this sense, this paper aims to answer the question: what is known about inter-organisational cooperation oriented towards sustainability involving SMEs |
Immigrant and Refugee Families: Global Perspectives on Displacement and Resettlement Experiences offers an interdisciplinary perspective on immigrant and refugee families' challenges and resilience across multiple domains, including economic, political, health, and human rights. This Open Education resource, “Cases on Social Issues: For Class Discussion – 2nd Edition”, includes valuable cases for student use on issues of discrimination, diversity, equity, inclusion and general social issues in the workplace. Included are cases for discussion on workplace scenarios as follows: homophobia; working with Indigenous communities; oil and gas pipelines and the family ranch; invisible disabilities; employee anxiety; safety for women, transgender women and non-binary people; and the bullying of new immigrants and refugees. The critical events portrayed in the cases are realistic and emotional, and most feature the experiences of under-represented and marginalized people. These thoughtful, contemporary cases pose ethical dilemmas about social issues that encourage po... |
Due to the growing number of scholarly publications, finding relevant articles becomes increasingly difficult. Scholarly knowledge graphs can be used to organize the scholarly knowledge presented within those publications and represent them in machine-readable formats. Natural language processing (NLP) provides scalable methods to automatically extract knowledge from articles and populate scholarly knowledge graphs. However, NLP extraction is generally not sufficiently accurate and, thus, fails to generate high granularity quality data. In this work, we present TinyGenius, a methodology to validate NLP-extracted scholarly knowledge statements using microtasks performed with crowdsourcing. TinyGenius is employed to populate a paper-centric knowledge graph, using five distinct NLP met... |
The family with sequence similarity 83B (FAM83B) is one of the markers for poor prognosis in several carcinomas, but the expression and the mechanism resulted in malignant phenotype in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remain to be elucidated. |
Innovation is a general measure of the success of a company and shows a positive relationship with several key factors such as collaboration with universities and technology centers or belonging to medium- and high-tech sectors. While many studies have found that gender diversity in company management teams has a positive influence on companies’ economic success, few have focused on the impact that the inclusion of women in the board of directors has on product, process, and organizational innovation. This paper builds on previous knowledge about the determinants of innovations and shows that greater gender management team diversity, compared to male-only teams, positively affects the achievement of said innovations. |
International Finance Theory and Policy is built on Steve Suranovic's belief that to understand the international economy, students need to learn how economic models are applied to real world problems. It is true what they say, that ”economists do it with models.“ That's because economic models provide insights about the world that are simply not obtainable solely by discussion of the issues. |
Repeated exposures to sevoflurane could induce epigenetic modifications in specific brain regions and cognitive impairments in the immature mice. Conflicting findings make neurobehavioral manifestations intricate and potential mechanisms elusive. Influence of neonatal anesthesia with sevoflurane on the expression of synaptic scaffold proteins and neuronal activity remains to be determined. |
