Superlubricity and active friction control have been extensively researched in order to reduce the consumption of fossil energy, the failure of moving parts, and the waste of materials. The vibration-induced superlubricity (VIS) presents a promising solution for friction reduction since it does not require high-standard environment. However, the mechanism underlying the VIS remains unclear since the atomic-scale information in a buried interface is unavailable to experimental methods. In this paper, the mechanism of VIS was examined via numerical calculation based on the Prandtl—Tomlinson (PT) model and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results revealed that the pushing effect of stick—slip is one of the direct sources of friction reduction ability under vibrational excitatio... |
Bringing better spatial experience has been what architects aim to achieve for the past century, while predicting and simulating one’s spatial experience accurately is almost an impossible task for those who don’t have enough experience. Tools and techniques were invented in the progress to support designers to catch what users might really perceive. Diagrams that reflect the interaction between users and space is one of those tools. |
This research shows the light effects and geometric alignments created by the sunlight passing through the stained glasses of the Eastern rose window in Mallorca cathedral and projecting on the inner side of the cathedral’s main façade. Besides, we show other novel effects which occur in coincidence with certain religious festivities. |
Carpenter and Dunung's International Business: The Opportunities and Challenges of a Flat World provides exploration into building, leading, and thriving in global organizations in an increasingly flat world. The authors define ”Flat world“ as one where service industries that dwarf manufacturing industries in terms of scale and scope, an Internet that pervades life and work, and networks define modern businesses, whether service or manufacturing. Carpenter and Dunung's text is designed to speak to technologically-savvy students who see national borders as bridges and not barriers. |
Overview: This book is an outline of selected topics in introductory algebra-trig-based physics. The worked examples are level-one problems that are straightforward and accessible to novice students. The content of this book is a combination of borrowed materials (primarily from Openstax textbooks) and original writing. This book is and will remain a work in progress. |
The growth of databases in the healthcare domain opens multiple doors for machine learning and artificial intelligence technology. Many medical devices are available in the medical field; however, medical errors remain a severe challenge. Different algorithms are developed to identify and solve medical errors, such as detecting anomalous readings, anomalous health conditions of a patient, etc. However, they fail to answer why those entries are considered an anomaly. This research gap leads to an outlying aspect mining problem. |
This research concerns the development of a parametric format for the semantic description of 3D city models. Following a brief review of the state of the art, the case study is introduced (an historical city block in Catania) whose geometries will be semantically organised through the VPL Grasshopper. |
Intercultural Communication for the Community College |
This book introduces topics about identity, dress, and the body. Through the content, readers explore how individuals and communities use dress as a way to communicate (i.e. “negotiate” in fashion studies) their various identities. There is heightened attention to social justice, power, privilege, and oppression. That is, the content focuses on the experiences of historically marginalized communities and the ways they navigate dress and dressing their bodies in different contexts. In the first part of the book, readers are introduced to concepts and theories related to fashion, clothing, dress, and/or accessories. In the second part, readers examine the role that fashion, clothing, dress, and/or accessories play in identity development for individuals in marginalized communities in ... |
This study documents more than five years of analysis that drove the policy case, deployment, and retrospective evaluation for an innovative service model that enables Boston Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to respond quickly and effectively to investigation incidents in an area of heavy need in Boston. These investigation incidents are typically calls for service from passers-by or other third-party callers requesting that Boston EMS check in on individuals, often those who may appear to have an altered mental status or to be unhoused. First, this study reports the pre-intervention analytics in 2017 that built the policy case for service segmentation, a new Community Assistance Team designated “Squad 80” that primarily responds to investigation incidents in one broad area of the c... |
