An essential task of automated machine learning (AutoML
) is the problem of automatically finding the pipeline with the best generalization performance on a given dataset. This problem has been addressed with sophisticated black-box
optimization techniques such as Bayesian optimization, grammar-based genetic algorithms, and tree search algorithms. Most of the current approaches are motivated by the assumption that optimizing the components of a pipeline in isolation may yield sub-optimal results. We present Naive AutoML
, an approach that precisely realizes such an in-isolation optimization of the different components of a pre-defined pipeline scheme. |
This paper investigates mainly the asymptotic behavior of the nonautonomous random dynamical systems generated by the plate equations driven by colored noise defined on Rn. First, we prove the well-posedness of the equation in the natural energy space. Secondly, we define a continuous cocycle associated with the solution operator. Finally, we establish the existence and uniqueness of random attractors of the equation by the uniform tail-ends estimates methods and the splitting technique. |
We consider a 3d multi-structure composed of two joined perpendicular thin films: a vertical one with small thickness han and a horizontal one with small thickness hbn. We study the asymptotic behavior, as han and hbn
tend to zero, of an eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian defined on this multi-structure. |
Slavery to Liberation: The African American Experience gives instructors, students, and general readers a comprehensive and up-to-date account of African Americans’ cultural and political history, economic development, artistic expressiveness, and religious and philosophical worldviews in a critical framework. It offers sound interdisciplinary analysis of selected historical and contemporary issues surrounding the origins and manifestations of White supremacy in the United States. By placing race at the center of the work, the book offers significant lessons for understanding the institutional marginalization of Blacks in contemporary America and their historical resistance and perseverance. |
The globalization and digitalization of cultural markets presents formidable challenges for local cinema and storytelling. The essays in this collection address some of these challenges from the perspective of a critical political economy of local cinema. Inspiring these contributions is the effort of supporting local cinema as a form of valuable storytelling that is at risk of market-driven extinction because of the greater commercial viability of global or Hollywood cinema and national cinema. |
Graph coloring is widely used to parallelize scientific applications by identifying subsets of independent tasks that can be executed simultaneously. Graph coloring assigns colors the vertices of a graph, such that no adjacent vertices have the same color. The number of colors used corresponds to the number of parallel steps in a real-world end-application. Therefore, the total runtime of the graph coloring kernel adds to the overall parallel overhead of the real-world end-application, whereas the number of the vertices of each color class determines the number of the independent concurrent tasks of each parallel step, thus affecting the amount of parallelism and hardware resource utilization in the execution of the real-world end-application. |
Comprehensive studies on the impact of market access on port efficiency are scarce, and the problem that market access indicators are potentially endogenous lacks treatment in maritime economics. This paper offers both theoretical and empirical advances to fill these research gaps. First, it pioneers in the use of Stochastic semi-Nonparametric Envelopment of Z variables Data for measuring port efficiency, and further develops the methodology for panel data and proposes an instrumental variable extension for dealing with endogenous market access indicators. Second, it advances the empirical port literature by developing a unique panel dataset on Norwegian container ports encompassing a comprehensive set of foreland and hinterland connectivity measures. |
Population axiology concerns how to rank populations by the relation “is socially preferred to”. So far, population ethicists have (with important exceptions) focused less on the question of how to rank population prospects, that is, alternatives that contain uncertainty as to which population they will bring about. Most public policy choices, however, are decisions under uncertainty, including policy choices that affect the size of a population (such as climate policy choices). Here, we shall address the question of how to rank population prospects by the relation “is socially preferred to”. |
The load-bearing behaviour of lubricated contacts depends primarily on the normal force, the relative velocity, and the geometry. Thus, with the aid of the Stribeck curve, it is usually well possible to characterize whether hydrodynamics, mixed friction, or boundary friction is more likely to be present. The fact that the load regime can also depend on the fluid quantity is obvious, but has hardly been systematically investigated so far. Especially for contacts with microscopic roughness, the defined application of a very small amount of fluid is a very challenging requirement. In this paper, a very fundamental study shows how a pin-on-disc tribometer can be used to achieve the transition from dry friction via mixed friction to predominant hydrodynamics by the amount of supplied flu... |
A new type of lubricating material (BTA-P4444-Lig) was synthesized by combining lignin with tetrabutylphosphorus and benzotriazole. The tribological properties, corrosion resistance, and anti-oxidation properties of BTA-P4444-Lig as a lubricant were investigated. The lubricating material exhibits excellent friction reduction and wear resistance, as well as good thermal stability and excellent oxidation resistance. Mechanistic analysis reveals that the active elements N and P in the lubricating material react with the metal substrate, and the reaction film effectively blocks direct contact between the friction pairs, affording excellent friction reduction and wear resistance. At the same time, the phenolic hydroxyl group in lignin reacts with oxygen free radicals to form a resonance-... |
