Postpartum hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count (HELLP) syndrome is more difficult to treat than HELLP syndrome during pregnancy. We describe a case of postpartum HELLP syndrome that responded to plasma exchange (PE) therapy. |
To evaluate whether the 24-weeks postoperative fracture union rate for the investigational TFNA intramedullary nail was non-inferior compared to the control product PFNA-II. |
The effect of preoperative oral carbohydrates (POC) on insulin resistance (IR) of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) remains debatable. Enzyme-hydrolyzed rice flour (EHR) is a kind of water-soluble micromolecular carbohydrates. This study aimed to investigate the impact of preoperative oral EHR solution on gastric emptying and IR in patients undergoing LC. |
It has been suggested that administration of exogenous ketone supplements (EKSs) not only increases blood ketone body levels but also decreases blood glucose level and modulates isoflurane-induced anesthesia in different rodents, such as Wistar Albino Glaxo Rijswijk (WAG/Rij) rats. Thus, we investigated whether administration of EKSs can modulate the isoflurane anesthesia-generated increase in blood glucose level and the time required to recover from isoflurane-induced anesthesia. |
Carbon dioxide (CO2) increases cerebral perfusion. The effect of CO2 on apnea tolerance, such as after anesthesia induction, is unknown. This study aimed to assess if cerebral apnea tolerance can be improved in obese patients under general anesthesia when comparing O2/Air (95%O2) to O2/CO2 (95%O2/5%CO2). |
The end-tidal alveolar dead space fraction (AVDSf = [PaCO2−PETCO2]/PaCO2) is a metric used to estimate alveolar dead space. Higher AVDSf on the first day of mechanical ventilation is associated with mortality and fewer ventilator-free days. It is not clear if AVDSf is associated with length of ventilation in survivors, how AVDSf performs for risk stratification beyond the first day of ventilation, or whether AVDSf adds predictive value to oxygenation (oxygenation index [OI]) or severity of illness (Pediatric Risk of Mortality [PRISM III]) markers. |
Validation of registries is important to ensure accuracy of data and registry-based research. This is often done by comparisons of the original registry data with other sources, e.g. another registry or a re-registration of data. Founded in 2011, the Swedish Trauma Registry (SweTrau) consists of variables based on international consensus (the Utstein Template of Trauma). This project aimed to perform the first validation of SweTrau. |
Desflurane is not recommended during anesthesia induction because of its sympathetic stimulation effect, particularly in patients with myocardial ischemic disease. To date, the hemodynamic response to 1 MAC desflurane inhalation in combination with remifentanil infusion during anesthesia induction has rarely been reported. |
Readmission rates for heart failure remain high, and affordable technology for early detection of heart failure decompensation in the home environment is needed. Lung ultrasound has been shown to be a sensitive tool to detect pulmonary congestion due to heart failure, and monitoring patients in their home environment with lung ultrasound could help to prevent hospital admissions. The aim of this project was to investigate whether patient-performed tele-guided ultrasound in the home environment using an ultraportable device is feasible.Affiliations: Journal instruction requires a country for affiliations; however, these are missing in affiliations [1, 2]. Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is a condition that causes severe pain in the throat during swallowing. Although carbamazepine is a viable option for treating glossopharyngeal neuralgia, there are minimal data regarding the effect of alternative agents to treat it. We report on glossopharyngeal neuralgia, which is successfully controlled by levetiracetam. |
