Since the mid-1980s, Japan, which was a leading competitor in the world’s manufacturing sector, tried to transform itself to an economy with domestic demand-led mature growth. The ensuing bubbles, busts, and banking crisis, however, left the country chronicle deflation and stagnation. This book analyzes why the Japanese authorities could not avoid making choices that led to this outcome. This report describes policy responses to the boom, bust, crisis, and recovery Japan experienced during the two decades from 1986 to 2004. One hundred and fifty years ago, Japan started to westernize itself after the two centuries of isolation. Since then, it has made two miracles and two major mistakes. |

Renewable energy production is one of the most important policy instruments to fight climate change. However, despite global benefits, renewable energy production entails some local challenges, such as requiring more space per unit production capacity. In this paper, we study the external effects of large-scale conventional and renewable electric power generation facilities on local house prices. We combine information of all coal, gas, and biomass plants, as well as all wind turbines in the Netherlands, with 1.5 million housing transactions over a period of 30 years. |
This paper examines the impact of a policy reform in a municipality in Norway that extended to workers the right to self-certify sickness absence from work. After the reform, workers were no longer obliged to obtain a certificate from a physician to receive sickness benefits. They could call in sick directly to their line leader and had to engage in a counselling program organized by the employer. To estimate the effect of this reform, we contrast the change in sickness absence among employees who were granted the extended right to self-certify absence with absence among employees who had to obtain a physician’s certificate to be entitled to sickness benefits.
