    In the industry field, the increasingly stringent requirements of lightweight structures are exposing the ultimately nonlinear nature of mechanical systems. This is extremely true for systems with moving parts and loose fixtures which show piecewise stiffness behaviours. Nevertheless, the numerical solution of systems with ideal piecewise mathematical characteristics is associated with time-consuming procedures and a high computational burden. Smoothing functions can conveniently simplify the mathematical form of such systems, but little research has been carried out to evaluate their effect on the mechanical response of multi-degree-of-freedom systems.

    The paper describes how the attitude of a sounding rocket, launch vehicle or satellite with respect to the Earth can be estimated from camera images of the Earth horizon. Details about detecting the horizon in the camera image, fitting hyperbolae or ellipses to the detected horizon curve and deriving the Earth nadir vector and the corresponding error covariance from the fitted conic section are given. The presented method works at low heights, where the projected horizon mostly appears to be hyperbolic, as well as at large heights, where the projected horizon mostly appears to be elliptic and it is irrelevant if the Earth is fully or only partially in the field of view of the camera.

    Large-scale industrial application of additively manufactured (AM) components in general, and specifically cold sprayed additive manufactured (CSAM), is limited due to the nature of this technology and the resulting product’s porosity and embrittlement. To improve the final properties of additively manufactured material, many lengthy, complex, or expensive post-treatments have been proposed. Reducing the environmental impact, cost, and time required for additive manufacturing will allow for greater use in industrial applications. A novel thermomechanical treatment known as in situ electro-plastic treatment (ISEPT) is used in this study to treat CSAM Ti-6Al-4 V alloy known as grade 5 titanium.

    This work presents the evaluation of the interlayer temperature (IT) with travel speed (TS) combined effect for a given wire feed speed (WFS) on operational, geometrical, and metallurgical features of thin walls with the same width deposited by wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) with a low alloy steel, using or not active cooling. A preliminary experimental design was carried out to define a range of IT that could prevent the molten pool from running down and, then, be used in the main experimental design.     Thanks to their outstanding mechanical properties, Bulk Metallic Glasses (BMGs) are new alternatives to traditional crystalline metals for mechanical and micromechanical applications including power transmission. However, the tribological properties of BMGs are still poorly understood, mostly because their amorphous nature induces counter intuitive responses to friction and wear. In the present study, four different BMGs (Cu47Zr46Al7, Zr46Cu45Al7Nb2, Zr60Cu28Al12, and Zr61Cu25Al12Ti2) underwent ball-on-disc friction tests against 100Cr6 steel balls (American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) 52100) at different relative humidities (RHs) ranging from 20% to 80%.

    A non-destructive diagnostic method based on deflection analysis for monitoring the post-elastic response of beams was developed, and a diagnostic indicator was proposed. The indicator was defined as the second moment of the normalised curvature function about the mid-span, where the curvature was computed from the normalised deflection function. Elastic reference values of the indicator were computed for simply supported beams under uniformly distributed load, three-point, and four-point bending. Development of the indicator under progressive loading was examined with the help of finite element analyses.     Dimensions and surface roughness of magnesium alloy tubes were evaluated to elucidate the flattening behavior of asperity on the outer surface and the optimal condition for achieving thin wall and high surface quality in the combined process of the hollow sinking after die-less mandrel drawing. ZM21 tubes were drawn using a die after die-less mandrel drawing. Dimensions and surface roughness were measured, and the stress state of the asperity during hollow sinking was evaluated using finite element and slab methods.     Laser melting can be conducted in two different process regimes, the conduction and the keyhole mode, which exhibit significantly different characteristics, dynamics, and stability and are highly sensitive to a magnitude of process parameters. Despite these differences and the resulting high relevance of the prevailing process regime for process development, the regime is commonly deduced after specimen testing. An identification of the regime parallel to the process could speed up the process development of, for example, laser beam welding or laser-based powder bed fusion of metals.     Servo press forming machines are advanced forming systems that are capable of imparting interrupted punch motion, resulting in enhanced room temperature formability. The exact mechanism of the formability improvement is not yet established. The contribution of interrupted motion in the ductility improvement has been studied through stress relaxation phenomena in uniaxial tensile (UT) tests. However, the reason for improved formability observed when employing servo press is complicated due to the additional contribution from frictional effects. In the present work, an attempt is made to decouple the friction effect on formability improvement numerically. The improved formability is studied using a hole expansion test (HET).

    In this paper we will present a review of recent advances in the application of the augmented Lagrange multiplier method as a general approach for generating multiplier-free stabilised methods. The augmented Lagrangian method consists of a standard Lagrange multiplier method augmented by a penalty term, penalising the constraint equations, and is well known as the basis for iterative algorithms for constrained optimisation problems. Its use as a stabilisation methods in computational mechanics has, however, only recently been appreciated. We first show how the method generates Galerkin/Least Squares type schemes for equality constraints and then how it can be extended to develop new stabilised methods for inequality constraints.
