A Study on English Types of Sentences in 'The Gift of the Magi' with Reference to Vietnamese Equivalents

Abstract

This research examines the different types of sentences—complex, compound, and simple—in O. Henry's short story "The Gift of the Magi" and their Vietnamese equivalents. It details the structure and components of English sentences and the challenges in translating them into Vietnamese due to differing sentence structures. The study highlights the differences in word order and sentence construction, providing comparable Vietnamese examples and discussing the difficulties in translating idioms, adverbs, and adjectives that lack direct Vietnamese counterparts. Understanding these differences is crucial for accurate translation and effective communication. The study emphasizes the importance of considering language and cultural contexts in translation to maintain the original text's tone and meaning, advancing the field of translation studies by examining specific linguistic challenges in a literary work.
