Binary non-linear programs belong to the class of  which are computationally hard even to approximate. This paper aims to explore some conditions on the problem structure, under which the resulting problem can be well approximated. Particularly, we consider a setting when both objective function and constraint are low-rank functions, which depend only on a few  of the input variables, and provide  approximation schemes. Our result generalizes and unifies some existing results in the literature.

We here invent an implicitly new optical device - cylindrical Fresnel lenses historically used in the decades-old lighthouse concentrator to find application in the field of concentrator photovoltaic, with numerous demonstrations of exotic features in optics. The precious attribute of such a solar concentrator is its ability to grant a focal point sequence, essentially distributed over an arc at any light incidence. The other striking merit of this design is its high acceptance angle, about 60°, at hand and even up to 90°, ideally. We have applied this approach to a simplified principle-of-concept model that closely depicts the octagonal cylindrical Fresnel lens in essence. This convergence feature was evidenced in a mock-up model through optical simulation and further consolidated ...

A forward error correction (FEC) and unity-rate coded (URC) autoencoder (AE)-assisted communication system is proposed for the first time, which relies on soft iterative decoding for attaining a vanishingly low error probability. The AE-demapper is specifically designed for directly calculating the extrinsic logarithmic likelihood ratios (LLRs), which can be directly entered into the URC decoder for soft iterative decoding. This avoids the potential degradation due to the conversion of symbol probabilities to bit LLRs. A comprehensive capacity analysis of the AE is performed, which demonstrates the capacity advantage of the AE-aided constellation design over its conventional quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)/ phase shift keying (PSK) counterpart. Furthermore, we carry out its EX...

Fingerprint-inspired elastomeric grating meta-skin (EGMS) is herein fabricated to investigate the chirality of fingerprints. The EGMS is made by a facile nanoimprinting method with a diffraction grating as a template using polydimethylsiloxane, followed by gold deposition. The chirality of the surface is caused by symmetry breaking, induced by the pattern (P) and curvature (T). Furthermore, the chiroptical properties of EGMS are reconfigurable through the control of the skew angle (θ), which is the angle between P and T. The chiroptical properties of a fingerprint are also shown and interpreted in this perspective. On the basis of the results, we suggest the strategy to impart chirality on the surface, which is reconfigurable by controlling P and T. It will be a useful method to pro...

Understanding the effects of phase transition, phase coexistence, and surface magnetism on the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) in a magnetic system is essential to manipulate the spin to charge current conversion efficiency for spincaloritronic applications. We aim to elucidate these effects by performing a comprehensive study of the temperature dependence of the LSSE in biphase iron oxide (BPIO = α-Fe2O3 + Fe3O4) thin films grown on Si (100) and Al2O3 (111) substrates. A combination of a temperature-dependent anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) and electrical resistivity measurements show that the contribution of the ANE from the BPIO layer is negligible in comparison to the intrinsic LSSE in the Si/BPIO/Pt heterostructure, even at room temperature

In this paper, we consider a Levenberg–Marquardt method with general regularization terms that are uniformly convex on bounded sets to solve the ill-posed inverse problems in Banach spaces, where the forward mapping might not Gâteaux differentiable and the image space is unnecessarily reflexive. The method therefore extends the one proposed by Jin and Yang in (2016 Numer. Math. 133 655–684) for smooth inverse problem setting with globally uniformly convex regularization terms. We prove a novel convergence analysis of the proposed method under some standing assumptions, in particular, the generalized tangential cone condition and a compactness assumption. All these assumptions are fulfilled when investigating the identification of the heat source for semilinear elliptic boundary-valu...
