We study a solution approach for a staffing problem in multi-skill call centers. The objective is to find a minimal-cost staffing solution while meeting a target level for the quality of service to customers. We consider a common situation in which the arrival rates are unobserved random variables for which preliminary forecasts are available in a first stage when making the initial staffing decision. In a second stage, more accurate forecasts are obtained and the staffing may have to be modified at a cost, to meet the constraints. This leads to a challenging two-stage stochastic optimization problem in which the quantities involved in the (nonlinear) constraints can only be estimated via simulation, so several independent simulations are required for each first-level scenario. We p...

In this work, we are interested in studying the parallel drone scheduling traveling salesman problem (PDSTSP), where deliveries are split between a truck and a fleet of drones. The truck performs a common delivery tour, while the drones are forced to perform back and forth trips between customers and a depot. The objective is to minimize the completion time coming back to the depot of all the vehicles. We present a hybrid ant colony optimization (HACO) metaheuristic to solve the problem. Our algorithm is based on an idea from the literature that represents a PDSTSP solution as a permutation of all customers. And then a dynamic programming is used to decompose the customer sequence into a tour for the truck and trips for the drones. We propose a new dynamic programming combined with ...

An electrochemical approach has been used for green synthesis of gold and silver nanoparticles (e-AuNPs and e-AgNPs) with high levels of purity and scalability. The electrochemically synthesized noble-metal nanoparticles were characterized by ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), confirming the formation of spherical e-AuNPs and e-AgNPs with average size of 19 nm and 24 nm, respectively. These green nanoparticles were deposited on aluminum substrates using the drop-drying method for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based detection of Methylene Blue (MB) within the ranges from 10−5 M to 10−8 M and 10−7 M to 10−10 M, respectively. The SERS sensors also exhibited outstanding sensing performance for MB detection with limits of detectio...

Vehicle routing algorithms usually reformulate the road network into a complete graph in which each arc represents the shortest path between two locations. Studies on time-dependent routing followed this model and therefore defined the speed functions on the complete graph. We argue that this model is often inadequate, in particular for arc routing problems involving services on edges of a road network. To fill this gap, we formally define the time-dependent capacitated arc routing problem (TDCARP), with travel and service speed functions given directly at the network level. Under these assumptions, the quickest path between locations can change over time, leading to a complex problem that challenges the capabilities of current solution methods. We introduce effective algorithms for...

In this work, an eco-friendly approach for the synthesis of biogenic silver nanoparticles (bio-AgNPs) using botanical extracts in combination with an electrochemical process was carried out. We employed three types of plant extracts, including green tea leaf (GTE), grapefruit peel (GP), and mangosteen peel (MP) extracts to successfully synthesize the bio-AgNPs and optimized the experimental conditions aiming to get the highest synthetic yield. The formation of bio-AgNPs was monitored by UV-Vis spectroscopy via a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band at about 420–430 nm. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) showed their spherical shape with the size range within 23–55 nm. While X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis described in detail the crystalline structure of the bio-AgNPs with a fac...

Acetylserotonin O-methyltransferase (ASMT) is a key enzyme in the synthesis of melatonin. Although melatonin has been shown to exhibit anticancer activity and prevents endocrine resistance in breast cancer, the role of ASMT in breast cancer progression remains unclear. In this retrospective study, we analyzed gene expression profiles in 27 data sets on 7244 patients from 11 countries. We found that ASMT expression was significantly reduced in breast cancer tumors relative to healthy tissue. Among breast cancer patients, those with higher levels of ASMT expression had better relapse-free survival outcomes and longer metastasis-free survival times. Following treatment with tamoxifen, patients with greater ASMT expression experienced longer periods before relapse or distance recurrence...

A Machine Learning (ML) model based on Gaussian regression, using different kernel functions, is introduced in this paper to assess the load-carrying capacity of square concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns. The input data used to develop the prediction model, which consists of 314 datasets including the structural geometrical parameters and the mechanical properties of the materials, was collected from available resources in the literature. The performance of the prediction model has also been validated by comparing with: (i) other ML models such as Artificial neural network, Support vector machine, etc.; and (ii) existing formulations in the literature for predicting load-carrying capacity of square CFST columns (including several codes such as EC4, AISC and ACI). The obtai...

In the current work, we report the on-chip fabrication of a low-temperature H2S sensor based on p-type Co3O4 nanofibers (NFs) using the electrospinning method. The FESEM images show the typical spider-net like morphologies of synthesized Co3O4 NFs with an average diameter of 90 nm formed on the comb-like electrodes. The EDX data indicate the presence of Co and O elements in the NFs. The XRD analysis results confirm the formation of single-phase cubic spinel nanocrystalline structures (Fd3 m) for the synthesized Co3O4 NFs. The Raman results are in agreement with the XRD data through the presence of five typical vibration modes of the nanocrystalline Co3O4. The gas sensing properties of the fabricated Co3O4 NF sensors are tested to 1 ppm H2S within a temperature range of 150 °C to 450...

Herein, we report a green, expeditious, and practically simple protocol for direct coupling of carboxylate salts and ammonium salts under ACN/H2O conditions at room temperature without the addition of tertiary amine bases. The water-soluble coupling reagent EDC·HCl is a key component in the reaction. The reaction runs smoothly with unsubstituted/substituted ammonium salts and provides a clean product without column chromatography. Our reaction tolerates both carboxylate (which are unstable in other forms) and amine salts (which are unstable/volatile when present in free form). We believe that the reported method could be used as an alternative and suitable method at the laboratory and industrial scales
