Open organizations are structures in which members of the public engage in work for the organization. Examples include open-source software, Amnesty International, Wikipedia, and Lego communities. Much research focuses on structural design characteristics of open organizations, such as pre-specified task divisions and integration teams. These practices require the organization to a priori structure in response to its mission. Increasingly, however, open organizations like CrowdDoing and Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT) require public involvement across volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous (VUCA) contexts. |
Model-driven engineering (MDE) is an effective means of synchronizing among stakeholders, thereby being a crucial part of the software development life cycle. In recent years, MDE has been on the rise, triggering the need for automatic modeling assistants to support metamodelers during their daily activities. Among others, it is crucial to enable model designers to choose suitable components while working on new (meta)models. A new Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) method for solving nonlinear least squares problems with convex constraints is described. Various versions of the LM method have been proposed, their main differences being in the choice of a damping parameter. In this paper, we propose a new rule for updating the parameter so as to achieve both global and local convergence even under the presence of a convex constraint set. The key to our results is a new perspective of the LM method from majorization-minimization methods. Specifically, we show that if the damping parameter is set in a specific way, the objective function of the standard subproblem in LM methods becomes an upper bound on the original objective function under certain standard assumptions. The phenomenon of fast-growing companies exhibiting sustained growth and creating disproportionally many new jobs, so-called “gazelles”, has been widely analyzed in the literature. The criteria defining “gazelles”, however, lack a consensus, while it cannot be ruled out that superior performance of these companies is just good luck. We use large firm-level datasets for Russia and Spain and conduct a Monte Carlo experiment with first-order Markov chains to derive a definition of “gazelle” companies and ensure that their existence cannot be explained by chance only. |
Mesh-based image warping techniques typically represent image deformation using linear functions on triangular meshes or bilinear functions on rectangular meshes. This enables simple and efficient implementation, but in turn, restricts the representation capability of the deformation, often leading to unsatisfactory warping results. We present a novel, flexible polygonal finite element (poly-FEM) method for content-aware image warping. Image deformation is represented by high-order poly-FEMs on a content-aware polygonal mesh with a cell distribution adapted to saliency information in the source image. |

Inversion of radiative transfer models (RTMs) is key to interpreting satellite observations of air quality and greenhouse gases, but is computationally expensive. Surrogate models that emulate the full forward physical RTM can speed up the simulation, reducing computational and timing costs and allowing the use of more advanced physics for trace gas retrievals. In this study, we present the development of surrogate models for two RTMs: the RemoTeC algorithm using the LINTRAN RTM and the SCIATRAN RTM. We estimate the intrinsic dimensionality of the input and output spaces and embed them in lower dimensional subspaces to facilitate the learning task.
