Since its emergence in the 1960s, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has grown to conquer many technology products and their fields of application. Machine learning, as a major part of the current AI solutions, can learn from the data and through experience to reach high performance on various tasks. This growing success of AI algorithms has led to a need for interpretability to understand opaque models such as deep neural networks. Various requirements have been raised from different domains, together with numerous tools to debug, justify outcomes, and establish the safety, fairness and reliability of the models. |
We present an evolutionary model which allows us to study the impact relationship-specific investment has on bargaining. Agents are matched to play an investment and bargaining game. During bargaining, agents have an outside option to form a new relationship, but in exercising this option loses their current investment. We find that the stochastically stable post-investment bargaining convention is dependent on the cost of investment. In particular, the larger the cost of investment, the lower is the share of gross surplus that is received. This stands in contrast with previous studies. In addition, we find that there is under-investment. We disentangle the forces which lead to these two results. |
Image processing is a very broad field containing various areas, including image super-resolution (ISR) which re-represents a low-resolution image as a high-resolution one through a certain means of image transformation. The problem with most of the existing ISR methods is that they are devised for the condition in which sufficient training data is expected to be available. This article proposes a new approach for sparse data-based (rather than sufficient training data-based) ISR, by the use of an ANFIS (Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System) interpolation technique. |
This paper presents an investigation of speaker adaptation using a continuous vocoder for parametric text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis. In purposes that demand low computational complexity, conventional vocoder-based statistical parametric speech synthesis can be preferable. While capable of remarkable naturalness, recent neural vocoders nonetheless fall short of the criteria for real-time synthesis. We investigate our former continuous vocoder, in which the excitation is characterized employing two one-dimensional parameters: Maximum Voiced Frequency and continuous fundamental frequency (F0). |
Let A be a finite-dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field. We use a functorial approach involving torsion pairs to construct embeddings of endomorphism algebras of basic projective A–modules P into those of the torsion submodules of P. As an application, we show that blocks of both the classical and quantum Schur algebras S(2,r) and Sq(2,r) in characteristic p > 0 are Morita equivalent as quasi-hereditary algebras to their Ringel duals if they contain 2pk simple modules for some k. |
Basic thoracic ultrasound is being used more frequently by clinicians in several settings due to its high diagnostic accuracy for many common causes of respiratory failure and dyspnoea. However, ultrasound examinations are operator-dependent, and sufficient competences are needed to obtain high sensitivity and specificity of examinations. Additionally, it is crucial for ultrasound operators to perceive the competence to interpret the images and integrate them into the patient history and other examinations. This study aims to explore and gather validity evidence for an objective structured clinical examination test of basic thoracic ultrasound competences and establish a pass/fail score. |
Endobronchial Metastasis from extrathoracic tumors is a rare neoplasm that accounts for approximately 1.1% of total endobronchial malignancies. The most common primary tumors associated with EBM are from the colorectal, breast, and kidney regions. Although it represents a late manifestation in the context of tumor progression, it can rarely antedate the diagnosis of the primary tumor. |
Spontaneous and traumatic pneumothorax are most often treated with chest tube (CT) thoracostomy. However, it appears that small-bore drainage systems have similar success rates with lower complications, pain, and discomfort for the patient. We present the description of the ultrasound-guided technique for pneumothorax drainage with an 8.3-French pigtail catheter (PC) in a case series of 10 patients. |
A simple drawing D(G) of a graph G is one where each pair of edges share at most one point: either a common endpoint or a proper crossing. An edge e in the complement of G can be inserted into D(G) if there exists a simple drawing of G+e extending D(G). As a result of Levi’s Enlargement Lemma, if a drawing is rectilinear opseudolinear), that is, the edges can be extended into an arrangement of lines (pseudolines), then any edge in the complement of G can be inserted. In contrast, we show that it is NP-complete to decide whether one edge can be inserted into a simple drawing. This remains true even if we assume that the drawing is pseudocircular, that is, the edges can be extended to an arrangement of pseudocircles. |
Finite elements with polynomial basis functions on the simplex with a symmetric distribution of nodes should have a unique polynomial representation. Unisolvence not only requires that the number of nodes equals the number of independent polynomials spanning a polynomial space of a given degree, but also that the Vandermonde matrix controlling their mapping to the Lagrange interpolating polynomials can be inverted. Here, a necessary condition for unisolvence is presented for polynomial spaces that have non-decreasing degrees when going from the edges and the various faces to the interior of the simplex. |
