Joint radar and communication (JRC) has recently attracted substantial attention. The first reason is that JRC allows individual radar and communication systems to share spectrum bands and thus improves the spectrum utilization. The second reason is that JRC enables a single hardware platform, e.g., an autonomous vehicle or a UAV, to simultaneously perform the communication function and the radar function. As a result, JRC is able to improve the efficiency of resources, i.e., spectrum and energy, reduce the system size, and minimize the system cost. However, there are several challenges to be solved for the JRC design. In particular, sharing the spectrum imposes the interference cause...

The Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes are a significant cultural heritage site in the Silk Road, famous for its wonderful murals and statues. The rainfall causes the changes of humidity in the caves, which can easily activate the salts diseases of murals. In order to prevent the deterioration of the murals, the environmental monitoring tests were conducted to analyze the microclimate changes of the cave in rainfall weather, and proposed the risk prevention measures and suggestions. The results indicate that the temperature of caves has small change, but the humidity shows a clear trend of increase. The humidity and the duration of high humidity increases with the increase of the rainfall grade ...

This paper is primarily concerned with the following random coverage problem. Given a specified compact region A in a d-dimensional Euclidean space, what is the probability that A is fully covered by a union of Euclidean balls of radius r centred on n points placed independently uniformly at random in A, in the large-n limit with r=r(n) becoming small in an appropriate manner?

There are usually trade-offs between maximizing the color saturation and brightness and minimizing the angle-dependent effect in structural colors. Here, a magnetic field-induced assembly for the rapid formation of scalable, uniform amorphous photonic arrays (APAs) featuring unique structural colors is demonstrated. The magnetic field plays a fundamental role in photonic film formation, making this assembly technology versatile for developing structural color patterns on arbitrary substrates. The synergistic combination of surface plasmonic resonance of the Ag core and broadband light absorption of high refractive index (RI) Fe3O4 shell in hybrid magnetoplasmonic nanoparticles (MagPla...

Cellulose nanomaterial (CNM) aspect ratio strongly influences sheet formation and resulting mechanical, optical, and barrier properties. However, there is a lack of fast and reliable methods for CNM aspect ratio determination, limiting the reliable production of nanocellulose at industrial-scale. Current laboratory approaches comprise microscopic (e.g. atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)), and sedimentation methods, which are time-consuming and limited to specific CNM fibre sizes. Here, we describe a new rheological method to determine the aspect ratios for the whole size range of cellulose fibres using rheology. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), cell...

An electrochemical sensor based on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified with porphyrin-functionalized magnetic graphene oxide (TCPP-MGO) was developed for the sensitive and selective determination of malondialdehyde (MDA), an important biomarker of oxidative damage, in serum samples. The coupling of TCPP with MGO allows the exploitation of the magnetic properties of the material for separation, preconcentration, and manipulation of analyte, which is selectively captured onto the TCPP-MGO surface. The electron-transfer capability in the SPCE was improved through derivatization of MDA with diaminonaphthalene (DAN) (MDA-DAN). TCPP-MGO-SPCEs have been employed to monitor the ...

The α2 adrenergic receptor agonist dexmedetomidine is an important intravenous sedative with analgesic properties. Currently available dexmedetomidine reversal agents, like the α2-receptor antagonist atipamezole, cause serious adverse effects at the large dosages required for effective reversal; they are not used clinically. Without reversal agents, emergence times from dexmedetomidine sedation are slow. In this study we tested the ability of low-dose atipamezole, in combination with caffeine, to reverse dexmedetomidine sedation. The low dose of atipamezole employed should not be associated with unwanted effects.

Sepsis and septic shock remain drivers for morbidity and mortality in critical illness. The clinical picture of patients presenting with these syndromes evolves rapidly and may be characterised by: (a) microbial host invasion, (b) establishment of an infection focus, (c) opsonisation of bacterial products (e.g. lipopolysaccharide), (d) recognition of pathogens resulting in an immune response, (e) cellular and humoral effects of circulating pathogen and pathogen products, (f) immunodysregulation and endocrine effects of cytokines, (g) endothelial and organ damage, and (h) organ crosstalk and multiple organ dysfunction. Each step may be a potential target for a specific therapeutic appr...

This open access book analyses the development problems of sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) from the eyes of a Korean diplomat with knowledge of the economic growth Korea has experienced in recent decades. The author argues that Africa's development challenges are not due to a lack of resources but a lack of management, presenting an alternative to the traditional view that Africa's problems are caused by a lack of leadership. In exploring an approach based on mind-set and nation-building, rather than unity – which tends to promote individual or party interests rather than the broader country or national interests – the author suggests new solutions for SSA's economic growth, inspired by Korea...

The importance of care for our sustainability is increasingly discussed by policy makers and academics. For several reasons, however, the law has failed to address it. Accordingly, care has long been in a state of crisis, where the needs of those who require care are not met, and those who care are routinely subject to discrimination and cannot care in a dignified way. The Covid-19 Pandemic has highlighted the extent of the problem. The EU has responded by announcing on 7 September 2022 ‘A European Care Strategy for Caregivers and Care Receivers’.

Parametric timed automata (PTA) have been introduced by Alur, Henzinger, and Vardi as an extension of timed automata in which clocks can be compared against parameters. The reachability problem asks for the existence of an assignment of the parameters to the non-negative integers such that reachability holds in the underlying timed automaton. The reachability problem for PTA is long known to be undecidable, already over three parametric clocks. A few years ago, Bundala and Ouaknine proved that for PTA over two parametric clocks and one parameter the reachability problem is decidable and also showed a lower bound for the complexity class PSPACENEXP.

Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) is an event-based reactive programming model where functions run in ephemeral stateless containers for short duration. For building complex serverless applications, function composition is crucial to coordinate and synchronize the workflow of an application. Some serverless orchestration systems exist, but they are in their primitive state and do not provide inherent support for non-trivial workflows like, Fork-Join. To address this gap, we propose a fully serverless and scalable design model ReactiveFnJ for Fork-Join workflow. The intent of this work is to illustrate a design which is completely choreographed, reactive, asynchronous, and represents a dyna...

The study analyses the readability and clarity of economic specialised texts on supplementary individual pensions. The research includes agreements on individual pension products available on the Polish market at the beginning of 2017. The level of comprehensibility of language has been assessed using the “Jasnopis” application, based, among others, on the FOG index, while the structure of the content of the agreements has been assessed by an expert linguist (the expert linguist is one of the authors of this and a number of other publications on clear and understandable texts). In addition, one of the texts was subject to a survey, the so-called cloze text, which provided more accurat...

Dexmedetomidine has analgesic properties, but the intraoperative analgesic effect of dexmedetomidine is often masked by the effects of other general anaesthetics. Therefore, the degree to which it reduces intraoperative pain intensity remains unclear. The objective of this double-blind, randomised controlled trial was to evaluate the independent intraoperative analgesic efficacy of dexmedetomidine in real-time.

This work proposes and compare two different approaches for real-time human action recognition (HAR) from raw depth video sequences. Both proposals are based on the convolutional long short-term memory unit, namely ConvLSTM, with differences in the architecture and the long-term learning. The former uses a video-length adaptive input data generator (stateless) whereas the latter explores the stateful ability of general recurrent neural networks but is applied in the particular case of HAR. This stateful property allows the model to accumulate discriminative patterns from previous frames without compromising computer memory. Furthermore, since the proposal uses only depth information, ...

Research, development and application of alternative fuels are common approaches in many countries around the world to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, to improve energy security as well as to decrease environmental pollution such as the greenhouse gas emission. The use of biodiesel fuels as an alternative fuel for petroleum diesel fuel is very effective for the reduction of CO2 emission, because biodiesel is produced from renewable biomass resources. However, there are a few of the using biodiesel research on CRDI (Common Rail Direct Injection) diesel engine. This paper describes a real time CRDI diesel engine 2.5TCI-A HYUNDAI STAREX simulations with blends of palm oil derived biod...

Predictive maintenance has revealed as one of the paradigms of Industry 4.0. This paper addresses a complete system for the acquisition, computing, monitoring and communication of ventilation equipment in underground tunnels based on TCP/IP protocol and accessible via WEB services. Not only does the proposed system collect different sensor data (temperatures, vibrations, pressures, tilt angles or rotational speed), it performs local data processing as well. This feature is the newest and most important of all those provided by the system design, and there is no equipment that offers a similar performance in current ventilation systems. This paper shows the design and implementation of...
