Some early violins have been reduced during their history to fit imposed morphological standards, while more recent ones have been built directly to these standards. We propose an objective photogrammetric approach to differentiate between a reduced and an unreduced instrument, whereby a three-dimensional mesh is studied geometrically by examining 2D slices. Our contribution is twofold. First, we validate the quality of the photogrammetric mesh through a comparison with reference images obtained by medical imaging, and conclude that a sub-millimetre accuracy is achieved. Then, we show how quantitative and qualitative features such as contour lines, channel of minima and a measure of a...

The analysis of the chemical composition of biomass plays an important role in all steps of the life cycle of biomass, especially in thermal conversion processes. Electrothermal vaporization (ETV) coupled with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) is a promising approach for biomass analysis as almost no sample preparation is required, samples can be analysed quickly, and the release of elements from the sample can potentially be quantified with temperature resolution. In this work, the concentration of seven important side and trace elements is determined in beechwood, torrefied wood, wheat straw, miscanthus, and spruce bark. For comparison and validation...

Validation of registries is important to ensure accuracy of data and registry-based research. This is often done by comparisons of the original registry data with other sources, e.g. another registry or a re-registration of data. Founded in 2011, the Swedish Trauma Registry (SweTrau) consists of variables based on international consensus (the Utstein Template of Trauma). This project aimed to perform the first validation of SweTrau.

Because mandatory disclosure of intellectual capital (IC) is restricted by accounting regulations, companies invest in voluntary IC disclosure (ICD) to reduce information asymmetries and support an adequate firm valuation by investors and other stakeholders. So far numerous studies analysing the value relevance of voluntary ICD have been published revealing mixed results. Thus, it is the purpose of this paper to statistically integrate and to explain the heterogeneity of results by applying a meta-analysis with 122 effects of 40 primary studies. Our results mainly support the value relevance of voluntary ICD resulting in higher market value, lower cost of equity, and higher accounting...

The negotiation of stakeholder values as a collaborative process throughout technology development has been studied extensively within the fields of Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Human-Computer Interaction. Despite their increasing significance for cybersecurity incident response, there is a gap in research on values of importance to the design of open-source intelligence (OSINT) technologies for this purpose. In this paper, we investigate which values and value conflicts emerge due to the application and development of machine learning (ML) based OSINT technologies to assist cyber security incident response operators.

In this study, we develop and empirically test a valuation model for a commonly encountered option in office leases: a tenant’s option to renew at future market rent (a fair market value) with lease termination as the maturity date. The model integrates decision analysis with real options analysis and market risk with private risks. “Option value” is defined as the private value of the option to either party pre-contract, while “option price” assumes a fair agreement between transacting parties and can be positive (rental premium paid) or negative (rental discount offered). Without manifest expectations, an analysis of a sample of office leases supports the model’s logic with price es...

This article discusses the Value-Added Tax (VAT) discipline relating to the representation services offered by football intermediaries in the contractual negotiation of the employment contract between the player and the club(s). The analysis is carried out taking into consideration the relevant legislative provisions of European Union (EU) law as well as the case law of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) and the findings of the EU VAT Committee. The VAT discipline of representation services provided by football intermediaries is first analyzed in light of the EU legislative acts regulating the different legal figures of intermediation contracts and the effects on the EU internal mark...

In order to stop Value-Added Tax (VAT) fraud, EU member states use the so-called reverse-charge (RC) mechanism, which effectively removes VAT withholding and refunding in business-to-business transactions. Using the German VAT return data, we examine the effects of the introduction of RC and find that requests of input tax refunding decline sharply in the affected industries, supporting the presence of fraud prior to the introduction of RC. Based on our estimates, we quantify the revenue losses from VAT fraud prior to RC implementation in these industries to be around 5% of VAT revenues.

This work presents a novel method for predicting vehicle trajectories in highway scenarios using efficient bird’s eye view representations and convolutional neural networks. Vehicle positions, motion histories, road configuration, and vehicle interactions are easily included in the prediction model using basic visual representations. The U-net model has been selected as the prediction kernel to generate future visual representations of the scene using an image-to-image regression approach.

Modern SAT solvers can emit independently-checkable proof certificates to validate their results. The state-of-the-art proof system that allows for compact proof certificates is propagation redundancy (PR ). However, the only existing method to validate proofs in this system with a formally verified tool requires a transformation to a weaker proof system, which can result in a significant blowup in the size of the proof and increased proof validation time. This article describes the first approach to formally verify PR proofs on a succinct representation. We present (i) a new Linear PR (LPR) proof format, (ii) an extension of the DPR-trim tool to efficiently convert PR proofs int...

The quad-cube is a special case of the metacube that itself is derivable from the hypercube. It is amenable to an application as a network topology, especially when the node size exceeds several million. This paper presents the following welcome properties of the graph, relating to its structure: (1) vertex transitivity that facilitates the working of an algorithm meant for a “local” context in the global context as well, and (2) an exact formula for the distance metric, which leads to a precise result on the distance-wise vertex distribution of the graph and an exact formula for the average vertex distance.

Australian tidal wetlands differ in important respects to better studied northern hemisphere systems, an artefact stable to falling sea levels over millennia. A network of Surface Elevation Table-Marker Horizon (SET-MH) monitoring stations has been established across the continent to assess accretionary and elevation responses to sea-level rise. This network currently consists of 289 SET-MH installations across all mainland Australian coastal states and territories. SET-MH installations are mostly in mangrove forests but also cover a range of tidal marsh and supratidal forest ecosystems. Mangroves were found to have higher rates of accretion and elevation gain than all the other categ...

Innovation is a general measure of the success of a company and shows a positive relationship with several key factors such as collaboration with universities and technology centers or belonging to medium- and high-tech sectors. While many studies have found that gender diversity in company management teams has a positive influence on companies’ economic success, few have focused on the impact that the inclusion of women in the board of directors has on product, process, and organizational innovation. This paper builds on previous knowledge about the determinants of innovations and shows that greater gender management team diversity, compared to male-only teams, positively affects the...

Mathematic modeling and analytical approach are presented for nonlinear vibration analysis of laminated plate with auxetic honeycomb core and magneto-electro-elastic face sheets supported by Pasternak-type elastic foundations. The laminated plate is subjected to the simultaneous action of blast, thermal, electric and magnetic loadings. The mechanical properties of auxetic core including negative Poisson’s ratio are assumed to depend on the geometrical parameters of the unit cells and elastic modulus of original material. The volume fraction of two components of each magneto-electro-elastic face sheet is chosen equally.
