This present research aims to develop understanding of a particular student’s performance and to identify the differences between the use of strategies between groups of students. Adopting quantitative method, it was found that the most frequent vocabulary learning strategies that learners employed belonged to the cognitive category. The study was conducted to discover common mistakes in the speaking performance of first-year English major students at Phenikaa University. Data was collected through students’ recordings and questionnaires. The results show the common mistakes students make and the causes that lead to the mistakes. In summary, there are two types of common mistakes that students make, which are related to grammar and pronunciation. The study also explores several causes of common mistakes in English speaking performance, including inappropriate pronunciation, lack of vocabulary, grammar, practice, preparation, weak listening ability, and lack of motivation for communicating in English. |

This research uses a survey questionnaire and semi-constructed interview to obtain data about the difficulties students have when writing academic essays and to provide particular solutions to help them improve their writing skills. Particularly, this study assesses students perceptions of the most common mistakes they make in such different stages of writing academic essays as planning, drafting, and revising.
