To examine the protecting effect of jasmine tea extract (JTE) against ultraviolet B (UVB) induced damage on human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells, the RPE cells were subjected to UVB exposure and sequential JTE administration. The cell viability, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and apoptosis were determined by MTT, 2ʹ,7ʹ-dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate and flow cytometer assays, respectively. Further, the cells treated with UVB irradiation and sequential JTE administration were subjected to RNA-sequencing analysis in order to identify genes and pathways involved in the UVB-induced damage and JTE protecting mechanisms.

This book is Part I of a two-part set that introduces the Java programming language. The text assumes the student will be using the BlueJ development environment and provides some introductory BlueJ material. Our experience has been that BlueJ is easy to learn and provides a good programming environment for the beginner programmer.

"We have designed this third edition of Java, Java, Java to be suitable for a typical Introduction to Computer Science (CS1) course or for a slightly more advanced Java as a Second Language course. This edition retains the “objects first” approach to programming and problem solving that was characteristic of the first two editions. Throughout the text we emphasize careful coverage of Java language features, introductory programming concepts, and object-oriented design principles. The third edition retains many of the features of the first two editions, including: Early Introduction of Objects Emphasis on Object Oriented Design (OOD) Unified Modeling Language (UML) Diagrams Se...

Locating bug code snippets (short for BugCode) has been a complex problem throughout the history of software security, mainly because the constraints that define BugCode are obscure and hard to summarize. Previously, security analysts attempted to define such constraints manually (e.g., limiting buffer size to detect overflow), but were limited to the types of BugCode. Recent researchers address this problem by extracting constraints from program documentation, which shows the potential for API misuse. But for bugs beyond the scope of API misuse, such an approach becomes less effective since the corresponding constraints are not defined in documents, not to mention the programs withou...

In times of demographic change, better job quality is needed to promote health and thereby extend employment participation among older workers. Past research has focussed on the investigation of single job quality characteristics, but neglected their combined effects on health and employment. To address this limitation, we have built upon an established typology based on nine job quality characteristics and representing five profiles of overall poor or good job quality constellations among manual and non-manual older workers, respectively. It was investigated how constant and changing job quality affects non-employment and how mental and physical health mediate this association.

This paper concerns the staffing optimization problem in multi-skill call centers. The objective is to find a minimal cost staffing solution while meeting a target level for the quality of service (QoS) to customers. We consider a staffing problem in which joint chance constraints are imposed on the QoS of the day. Our joint chance-constrained formulation is more rational capturing the correlation between different call types, as compared to separate chance-constrained versions considered in previous studies. We show that, in general, the probability functions in the joint-chance constraints display S-shaped curves, and the optimal solutions should belong to the concave regions of the...

Ensembles are among the state-of-the-art in many machine learning applications. With the ongoing integration of ML models into everyday life, e.g., in the form of the Internet of Things, the deployment and continuous application of models become more and more an important issue. Therefore, small models that offer good predictive performance and use small amounts of memory are required. Ensemble pruning is a standard technique for removing unnecessary classifiers from a large ensemble that reduces the overall resource consumption and sometimes improves the performance of the original ensemble. Similarly, leaf-refinement is a technique that improves the performance of a tree ensemble by...

This paper investigates the phenomenon of judicial law-making in the practice of the highest courts dealing with criminal matters in Germany and Poland on the basis of 200 of their decisions. While German jurisprudence principally acknowledges the right of the judiciary to create new law, the Polish legal theory generally rejects this notion. Still, research indicates that, in practice, the differences in the frequency and intensity with which these courts pass creative rulings are not as substantial as the discrepancy in the theoretical stance would suggest. Owing to circumstances, both the German Federal Court of Justice and the Polish Supreme Court are willing to create new legal n...

In articles published ten years apart in 2011 and 2021, Gur-Arye argues that when considering an agent’s explanation for doing something that looks, prima facie, like a criminal offence, we should distinguish between a plea of justification, and an assertion that one acted within one’s power. The former explains an agent’s reasons for having committed a pro tanto offence (i.e., actus reus + mens rea). The latter is a denial that the agent committed any pro tanto offence at all. In this piece, I build on Gur-Arye’s argument, suggesting that her claim about powers can be extended to all instances in which rights are displaced. I argue that in its expanded form, the practical significanc...

This article analyses juvenile justice reform in Vietnam and suggests how this connects with key transformations in wider Vietnamese cultures of control. It offers a grounded investigation of themes raised in recent discussions of policy transfer in the global criminal justice field. It concurs with others that global processes of policy convergence have their local limits, using Vietnamese examples to illustrate where this convergence comes about in practice and where it does not. It explores efforts to professionalize existing community justice practices through a discussion of perceived needs for ‘training’ and for the expansion of ‘counselling’. In doing so, it aims to show how ju...

This article examines Vietnams regulations and practices concerning the right to defence of juvenile offenders in comparison with international standards. I use mixed methods including statistics and analysis of case studies. Research findings indicate that Vietnams laws firmly state the right to defence of juvenile offenders but lack specific guarantees for appropriate legal support and protection of privacy.
